I am a Foundation Professor of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). I earned a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1995 and came to UNR in 1996. I have published widely on the social determinants of wellbeing but only recently began referencing my own experiences in my writing and public speaking. In 1985, I spent fourteen months in a mental hospital, where I was encouraged to share my experiences. Later, in the “real world” I learned to keep my history of mental illness a secret. With professional success comes the privilege of telling my story in the hopes of helping others.

He is also the founder of Changemaker International, an organization focused on enabling youth to gain the skills to be social innovators.
